Thabile Nkunjana, Senior Economist: Trade Research Unit Markets and Economic Research Division, National Agricultural Marketing Council


Nkunjana is a senior agricultural economist at the National Agricultural Marketing Council (NAMC) under the Trade Research Unit. He’s work focus is on consumer and macroeconomics and trade. Amongst other things, he monitors international and local trade policy changes with a focus on tariffs and other trade restrictions on agricultural products imported or exported by South Africa. He writes memos for the Minister of Agriculture’s office.

Currently he’s co-chairing a Budget Support Programme for the Transformation of Wines and Spirits sector in the Republic of South Africa – Including Marketing and Distribution in priority markets outside the EU. In 2022, he was appointed to lead a joint research project between the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) Secretariat, the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, the National Agricultural Marketing Council (NAMC), and FANRPAN to assess the impact the war in Ukraine has on the SADC states.

In 2023, he led a research study that looking at prospective markets for South African horticultural exports to Africa. He writes commentaries or articles for various media platforms. He holds BSc honors in agricultural economics from University of Fort Hare and is perusing postgraduate studies with Stellenbosch University.
